Closure: April 2014

Somehow, I managed to watch a good many movies in April. I guess I caught the film bug, because many of my TV shows have been totally neglected for the past few weeks. Regardless, it was exciting to have the chance to watch some of my old favorites. It had been quite some time since I last watch The Dark Knight, which is totally unacceptable. Also, I had the opportunity to introduce yet another person to The Prestige, which may or may not be even better than The Dark Knight, depending on what day you ask me. Regardless, Christopher Nolan is a genius, and you should watch every single one of his films... immediately.

Take a look at all of the movies I watched in April:

Closure: February 2014

Often times, I have people come up to me and ask me about the quality of certain films or if I have seen a film. Sometimes, I actually have an answer for them, and that answer may not be accessible through one of my reviews (because I can't write about EVERY movie that I watch). So, this month, for the first time, I have decided to share with you every single film that I have watched over the past month. Hopefully, this type of write up will become a monthly thing, but, for now, it is in beta-mode. My plan for this segment is to give people a look at some of the films that I have watched and, potentially, peak their interest in some films that may only be found on Netflix or at the Redbox or wherever. I try to write a review of most every film that I watch in the theater, but, sometimes, even those don't get their own write-up. This new segment, which I have deemed "Closure," will give you a list of every film that I have watched over the previous month, how I watched each film, and whether I would suggest it for the average moviegoer. Hopefully, I will have people come up to me and say, "Hey! I saw where you watched x! How was it? What was it really about?" Anyway, let me know what you think about the segment and how I could change it to better please my readers! Enjoy...

February has been a fairly busy month, with school kicking into high gear, so I haven't had time to watch too many films. However, I managed to avoid any duds, which means you should check out each of the films below:

Movie   Year Format Did I Enjoy? Would I Watch Again?
Super 8 2011 Blu-Ray > Own Yes Yes

Despicable Me 2

Expectations:
When Despicable Me came out, back in 2010, I was not as impressed as most moviegoers. Sure, the Minions were hilarious and Agnes was the cutest animated character to grace the big screen in a long time, but the story focused on the infamous villain, Gru, meaning that there was more time spent on a character that was so-so instead of the characters that everybody loved. To top it off, I have been wondering for at least three years why exactly the film was titled Despicable Me. If anyone can give me a clever or true solution to this predicament, you get a shout out in my next blog post... Deal?... So, needless to say, I wasn't quite as excited about Despicable Me 2 as most people were. However, I really do enjoy watching animated films in the theater, where one can experience the film with the multitudes of children yelling out their own crazy antics at the characters on screen. There are few things in life more entertaining. Also, knowing that almost everybody loved the minions and Agnes the most of any of the characters, I expected to see a lot of them in the sequel, which I assumed I would enjoy...

Plot:
With the focus remaining on Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), Despicable Me 2 was quite similar to its predecessor, as far as the plot was concerned. Of course, the film did not dwell on the same moral issues, due to Gru's newfound niceness, and, obviously, with the success at the box office, people don't really care about the originality of the storyline. But, I think the story was a little bit too safe. Not that animated films have to be daring and unique, especially in sequels. I just wanted the mediocrity of Despicable Me to be overcome in its sequel, and that did not happen for me. Don't get me wrong, the film was great, and I'm sure the kids will learn something important from it. It just never felt like groundbreaking storytelling, which is probably because I had higher expectations.

Characters:
As was the case with the plot, the spread of time spent on the various characters was also very similar to the first film. With Gru at the center of the story and Agnes (voiced by Elsie Kate Fisher) and the Minions providing the laughs, most of the other characters lacked significance. Amazingly, Edith, voiced by Dana Gaier, was the only character that really faded into the background. Otherwise, the filmmakers did a good job of incorporating each character, regardless of how insignificant they really should have been.

Negatives:
As I mentioned above, Edith had absolutely nothing to contribute to the storyline. The writers couldn't even come up with something stupid for her to do, much less something good. As for characters who actually had something to do, I really didn't care for Lucy, voiced by Kristen Wiig. While I'm glad that Gru had a love interest, I just wish she was actually funny in some sort of way.

Positives:
As I have already said (twice), I really do love Agnes and the Minions. Without the two, this movie would be absolutely horrible. Honestly, take the Minions out of Despicable Me and you have a meanish guy and a little girl that talks funny, otherwise known as Wreck It Ralph. I really hope that the Minions get there own film, before we have another Despicable Me. It may lack in plot, but I could watch those little yellow blobs ALL DAY LONG.

Conclusion:
No better... No worse... That's how I would describe Despicable Me 2, in comparison to the original. I also just noticed that I went from a Pixar film review to an R-rated comedy review to a Despicable Me 2 review. Gosh I'm versatile.... I know was critical of the first film, but I guess it's ok that the second was strikingly similar, because Despicable Me 2 could have been the next Hangover 3! I challenge you to find that sentence anywhere else on the internet! Once again, shout out to you, if you can find it. If you have children and NEED to go to the theater, I strongly suggest this as a family film. Not only does it bring more laughs than Monsters University, but it also manages to teach lessons in a more subtle manner and allows for a lot of emotional support, particularly if your family is sort of odd like Gru's. Honestly, though, if you have kids, you should just stay at home. That popcorn is expensive! I give Despicable Me 2 3.02 out of 5 stars.

Summer Preview: 2013

With the release of Iron Man 3 on May 3, the 2013 summer movie season will officially begin, and it is time to get excited, folks! The summer of 2012 was not the most satisfying, so I'm hopeful that we will see a great improvement in 2013. FYI... I categorize the months of May-August as the "summer movie months," disqualifying any films that are released outside of this broad date range. Below, I have listed five categories of film expectations that I have for this summer. All of the lists are in complete random order, so you get to guess which will top each list! Chachingiest Expectations includes films that I expect to make the most money. This list may be completely wrong, as I did zero research on what films are expected to have high grosses. Lowest Expectations includes films that I don't really think will be worth watching, and I may never know whether they are worth it, because I may not even watch. Bombing Expectations includes films that I believe will fail to meet their monetary expectations (like 2012's John Carter or Battlefield). Finally, my High Expectations categories, for both drama and comedy, include films that I expect to be the best of the summer of 2013. Can these films meet my high expectations? Only time will tell. So, grab your 3D glasses, take them to the theater, buy a 2D ticket, and sneak in to the 3D movie, because it's clever! Happy summer, folks!

A Look Ahead to 2013

Yet another year of blogging has come and gone, and I can't quite believe it. When I started this thing in 2011, I didn't really know how much I would enjoy it. I mean, come on, what college kid actually wants to write MORE. However, I have greatly enjoyed it, and my hope is that you have as well. So, until people stop reading or I get sick of writing, I'm gonna keep on going.

Sometimes I enjoy doing these odd little posts even more than the usual reviews, because I get to really say whatever I want about whatever I want. But, I do try to make each of them have a purpose, and the purpose of this post is to look ahead to what will be happening in movies and with the blog in 2013. Firstly, there will be no Great Expectations for January, because there are really no new movies coming out that I am planning on watching. In January, I will be focusing on catching up on some movies I have been wanting to rent. However, there may be a review or two, because there are a few movies that I haven't yet been able to watch, due to the busy nature of the Christmas season. Also in January, look for my Notscars list, which should be up early in the month. This list will highlight the worst in movies from 2012 but will be much different (and shorter) than last year's list. My Above Average Awards (I think it clever), which is a list of the best in 2012, will likely be out in early February. I know most people have already forgotten about 2012 by February, but, if I give you that list any earlier, I will feel like it is incomplete, because of the number of movies that I want to watch between now and then. The more movies that I watch, the more accuracy I will have in my list of best actors/actresses/movies.

After I take a nap from all the writing for The Above Average Awards, I will then proceed to review more films, as February and March roll around. Depending on what I do during the summer months (internship?), I may have to take a break from blogging, but I certainly hope not. I gotta keep my people informed! I believe that is all I have for now, so here are a few lists for you (release dates and my excitement are subject to change):

Top 5 movies that I can't wait to see in 2013:

5. This is the End (June 14)
